Statement from Cuban Parliament on Situation in Honduras

The National Assembly of People’s Power of the Republic of Cuba yesterday issued a statement repudiating the flagrant violation of human rights being suffered by the people of Honduras.
Below is the integral text of the document:

Given the gravity of events that are still occurring in the sister Republic of Honduras, the National Assembly of People’s Power of the Republic of Cuba affirms its profound concern over the flagrant violation of the most elemental human rights of the people of that country as a consequence of their determined and constant resistance and rejection of the coup d’état and the dismantling of the constitutional and democratic regime of the government of President Manuel Zelaya.

We join the universal repudiation and condemnation of the military regime imposed on that nation and call for the implementation of more energetic and profound measures on the part of the international community in order to achieve a return to normality and the restoration of the Honduran president, democratically and popularly elected, as a manifestation of the will of his people.

Zelaya’s presence in Tegucigalpa constitutes a gesture of courage and is based on his legitimate right as the constitutional president of Honduras. His physical integrity and that of his family, of the diplomatic personnel and other employees in the Brazilian embassy, as well as that of the group of Hondurans present there must be respected and guaranteed by the coup perpetrators. The barbaric repression of demonstrations by the people in support of the democracy that they are defending and which they deserve must likewise be ended.

Declaración del Parlamento cubano sobre
situación en Honduras

La Asamblea Nacional del Poder Popular de la República de Cuba emitió ayer una Declaración en que repudia la flagrante violación de los derechos humanos que sufre el pueblo de Honduras.

El texto íntegro del documento es el siguiente:

Ante la gravedad de los hechos que continúan ocurriendo en la hermana República de Honduras, la Asamblea Nacional del Poder Popular de la República de Cuba, expresa su más profunda preocupación por la violación flagrante de los más elementales derechos del pueblo de ese país, como consecuencia de su firme y permanente resistencia y rechazo al golpe de Estado y la desarticulació del régimen constitucional y democrático existente bajo el gobierno del presidente Manuel Zelaya.

Nos unimos al repudio universal que desaprueba y condena el régimen militar impuesto en esa nación y llamamos a la aplicación de medidas más enérgicas y profundas de la comunidad internacional, para lograr el retorno a la normalidad y la restitución de su presidente electo de manera democrática y popular, como manifestación de la voluntad de su pueblo.La presencia de Zelaya en Tegucigalpa constituye un gesto de valentía y se fundamenta en el legítimo derecho que tiene como presidente constitucional de Honduras. La integridad física del mismo y su familia, del personal diplomático y otros empleados de la Embajada de Brasil, así como del grupo de hondureños que allí se encuentran; debe ser respetada y garantizada por los golpistas. Asimismo, debe cesar la bárbara represión que se lleva a cabo contra las manifestaciones de apoyo y reclamo de la población a favor de la democracia que defienden y merecen.
